Hazel Chung as a Baris Dancer

Hazel Chung is a graduate of The Julliard School of Dance and Music.  She performed in the King and I with Yul Brynner on Broadway and with the touring company.  Hazel studied dance in Indonesia with grants from the Indonesian government and the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations.  She became well known for her Baris dance, a role typically reserved for only the best and strongest Balinese male dancers.  She was a faculty member in the Dance Departments of UCLA, University of Hawaii, University of Maryland College Park, UMBC and Goucher College.

Hazel discovered shiatsu while living and teaching dance in Hawaii.  At the Omega Institute, she met Wataru Ohashi and was introduced to Ohashiatsu.  She finds the Ohashiatsu methods superior in attending to the body, mind and spirit.

Hazel Chung, a Certified OHASHIATSU® Instructor for 25 years, teaches the Ohashiatsu curriculum through the Advanced I level in Maryland.  Having lived in West Africa, Indonesia and Hawaii, and with a strong dance backgound steeped in Eastern and Western techniques; Ms. Chung brings to her classes a unique intercultural approach to self healing.  She teaches ‘new ways’ of approaching health and life that have been deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy.

“I’ve learned so much from the Balinese.  I wanted to give back.“ In the first year of teaching in Bali, she awarded full scholarships to six Balinese to study Ohashiatsu Beginning I.  “We were excited about this wonderfully rich cultural exchange, and made plans to continue the program in Bali.”
